The short answer

Shri Mahavirji Temple: what visitors should know first

Yes if you have any interest in Jain pilgrimage or temple architecture; it is orderly, spacious and easy for most visitors. Go on a quiet day, dress modestly and check timings. The fair around Mahavir Jayanti in April is crowded.

History and context

The story behind Shri Mahavirji Temple

The image of Mahavira is said to have been discovered by a local farmer near Chandanpur village, and a small shrine, now known as chharan chatri, was built on the spot. The main temple was built in the 17th century by Digambar Jain merchant Amar Chand Bilala.

A Bhattaraka seat once existed here and became defunct in 1970. A large Mahavira statue was installed during the Mahamastakabhisheka of 2022.

Why it matters

Why Shri Mahavirji Temple is worth your time

Shri Mahavirji is among the most visited Jain pilgrimage sites in Rajasthan. According to the traditional story, a dairy farmer noticed his cow emptying her milk on a mound near Chandanpur village, and digging revealed the image of Mahavira. The present temple was built in the 17th century by the merchant Amar Chand Bilala, according to the published account.

It matters because it draws Jains and non-Jains alike, including Meena and Gujjar communities, to a shared fair. Along with Madan Mohan, Kaila Devi and Mehandipur Balaji, it is counted among the district's four Char Dham.

How to experience it

The main temple is the focus: a Nagara-style structure in marble and red sandstone with three golden kalashas, set before a tall marble column called the manastambha. Inside, devotees honour the central image of Mahavira, a seated sandstone figure of about 78 cm, in a quiet and reverential setting.

Around the main building are other shrines worth seeing: the Shantinath Jinalaya with a tall statue of Shantinatha, and the Kanch Mandir, known for mirror and glasswork. A small Jain museum in the town holds older sculptures. Walk between them slowly, as paths are wide and benches are available.

If you come in April you may catch the five-day fair around Mahavir Jayanti, which ends with a Ratha Yatra drawn by bullocks. It is colourful but very crowded, so plan with care.

Plan with confidence

Visit as a guest, not a spectator.

  • Dress modestly and remove footwear
  • Ask about leather and photography rules at the gate
  • Avoid fair days unless you want the festival
  • Carry cash for offerings and meals
  • Plan the drive with your driver as distances vary
