Plan 01
1 day in Kargil
- 01
Day 1: Bazaar, museum, and a rest stop
Arrive mid-morning and check into a simple hotel, then rest for an hour given the altitude. Walk through Kargil Bazaar in the late morning to see the copper and brass shops, the old serai (now containing the Munshi Aziz Bhat Museum), and the riverside edge. Have lunch at a local dhaba or family-run hotel restaurant. In the afternoon, visit the Munshi Aziz Bhat Museum to understand Kargil's Silk Route history, its trade routes and the 19th-century serai system. If energy permits, drive to a viewpoint over the Suru River valley for sunset light. Return for an early evening walk through the bazaar as it quiets down, then a simple dinner.

2 days in Kargil

Day 1: Bazaar and Munshi Museum
Arrive mid-morning, rest for 1–2 hours to acclimatize, then explore Kargil Bazaar on foot, spending time in the copper workshops and the shops selling traditional handicrafts. Visit the Munshi Aziz Bhat Museum and the adjacent Ek Sarai (the restored traders' rest house) to understand the Silk Route trade. Have lunch at a local restaurant. In the afternoon, drive to a riverside viewpoint or walk to Suru Bridge for photographs and a view of the valley. Rest in the early evening.

Day 2: Dras and the Kargil War Memorial
Leave early for Dras (58 km west, roughly 1.5 hours by road). Visit the Kargil War Memorial, which honours the soldiers killed in the 1999 conflict, and spend time understanding the memorial's architecture and exhibits. If roads are passable, visit Tiger Hill or Tololing, the peaks where much of the fighting occurred, for panoramic views of the valley and the harsh terrain of the Ladakh conflict. Have lunch in Dras and return to Kargil in the late afternoon. Spend the evening resting or shopping in the bazaar.

Day 2: Dras, Kargil War Memorial and high-altitude peaks
Leave early for Dras (58 km, 1.5 hours). Spend the morning at the Kargil War Memorial, understanding the 1999 conflict through its exhibits and architecture. If roads and fitness allow, climb to or drive up to Tiger Hill (8 km from Dras) or Tololing (4 km from Dras) for views of the battlefield and the surrounding ranges. Return to Kargil for a late lunch. In the evening, rest or walk by the Suru River.
- 03
Day 3: Zanskar or a trek to a local village
Option A: Drive south into Zanskar (start very early; the road can be slow). Stop at Padum or a Zanskar village to see a different Ladakh—forested, with more water, and far quieter than the main highway. Return by late afternoon. Option B: Take a guided walk or short trek from Kargil to a nearby village such as Pasku or Lamayuru (if direction and time allow) to see monasteries and shepherd settlements. Return to Kargil and prepare to drive towards Leh or Srinagar in the evening or early the next morning.

Pacing
Make the plan work for everyone
- Acclimatize for 1–2 days in Kargil (2,676 m) before any active sightseeing. Consult your doctor about altitude before visiting, especially if you have heart or lung conditions.
- The bazaar walk is gentle and level, but avoid the hottest part of the afternoon and carry water. Restaurants are close by.
- Dras (3,300 m) is higher and colder. The drive from Kargil is scenic but takes 1.5 hours; consider a single day trip rather than staying overnight unless you are very fit.
- Hotels have simple rooms without air conditioning (not needed at this altitude) but with heating. Confirm heating works and the bathroom is adjacent to the room to avoid long walks at night.
- Hire a car and driver for all journeys. Shared jeeps are crowded and unreliable, and walking distances to attractions are long.
- Medical facilities are limited to a district hospital in Kargil. Serious emergencies may require evacuation to Leh (6+ hours) or Srinagar (6+ hours). Carry any necessary medications and a first-aid kit.
