The short answer
Ramagiri Fort: what visitors should know first
Go only if you are happy with a rough, ruined hill fort. The last stretch is on foot, there are no visitor facilities, and the walk is steep. Start early, bring water, and treat it as a half-day outing from Karimnagar or Peddapalli.
History and context
The story behind Ramagiri Fort
Sources describe the fort as a 12th-century Kakatiya work. The Qutb Shahi sultanate held it from 1518 to 1687, and in 1656 Abdullah Qutb Shah is said to have given it to his son-in-law, one of Aurangzeb's sons. It passed to British control in 1791.
Local tradition links the ridge to the poet Kalidasa and to the Ramayana, but these are traditions and the poet is generally dated well before the fort.

Why it matters
Why Ramagiri Fort is worth your time
Ramagiri is one of the larger hill forts of the Telangana interior. Built in the 12th century by the Kakatiyas of Warangal, it later passed to the Qutb Shahi sultanate and then into British hands. The walls and octagonal bastions are a reminder of how the Kakatiya domain was held together through a chain of hill strongholds around Warangal.
The ridge is also known locally for its forest of medicinal plants, and the fort is a place where history and ecology overlap. For visitors who like walking, it offers more solitude than the better-known forts, in exchange for rough access and almost no services.
Highlights
What not to miss
- 01
Octagonal bastions
The stone walls are punctuated by many-sided bastions, a feature visible along the climb and at the summit.
- 02
Forest ridge
The hill is covered in forest known for medicinal plants, so the walk is as much a nature walk as a fort visit.
- 03
Views from the top
The ridge gives wide views across the surrounding forest and farmland on a clear morning.

How to experience it
From Karimnagar, take the road towards Manthani and follow it until the Begumpet crossroads, then turn off towards Begumpet village. Peddapalli is the nearest town of size, about 22 km away, and the nearest railhead. The drive from Karimnagar is roughly an hour and a half, depending on traffic and road work.
The last stretch to the fort, around 2 km, has to be done on foot. Begin early to keep ahead of the heat. The path rises through forest and rock to the walls, where octagonal bastions, gateways and ruined structures spread across the hill. Move slowly, watch footing on loose stone and keep to the visible paths.
There are no shops or toilets to count on. Bring water, snacks, a hat and sturdy shoes, and tell your driver when to expect you back. The reward is the open view from the ridge across forest and farmland, and the sense of having a large old fort almost to yourself.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
- Turn off at the Begumpet crossroads on the Karimnagar–Manthani road
- Plan on walking the last 2 km or so; there is no vehicle access to the walls
- Carry water and snacks; nothing is sold at the fort
- Start early and be down before the afternoon heat
- Check recent conditions with your driver or a local before you set out
