The short answer

Ujani Backwaters and Bhigwan Birding: what visitors should know first

Go from December to March if you enjoy birding by boat and can accept a long drive. Numbers vary from year to year and low water has reduced flamingos in some seasons, so check recent reports before travelling.

History and context

The story behind Ujani Backwaters and Bhigwan Birding

Construction of Ujani Dam began in 1969 and was completed in June 1980. Its reservoir is called Yashwant Sagar and lies on the Bhima, a tributary of the Krishna. The backwaters attract migratory birds, and Bhigwan has become known for birdwatching and wildlife photography.

Why it matters

Why Ujani Backwaters and Bhigwan Birding is worth your time

Ujani Dam on the Bhima, completed in June 1980, created a reservoir that stretches about 50 km upstream and submerged 82 villages. The shallow edges of that water are now one of western Maharashtra's best-known winter wetlands, with migratory birds and flamingos.

The site is a reminder that big dams change landscapes in both directions: they flooded land and homes, and they created habitat. Flamingo numbers rise and fall with rainfall and water levels, so seeing them is never guaranteed.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Plan to reach the main birding spots, which lie about 5 to 10 km from the centre of Bhigwan, soon after sunrise or in the late afternoon. Boats go out on the shallow backwaters, where greater flamingos gather in flocks and at times up to 1,000 to 1,200 have been recorded, along with ibis, storks and many other species; over 230 species have been recorded in the area.

Keep voices low, stay seated and let the boatman set the distance; the birds move off if disturbed. Bring binoculars and a camera with a long lens if you have one. Sunset is the most atmospheric time, with flamingos and ibis against the light.

Bhigwan is known for fish and for the Maharashtrian machhi thali, and village homestays are available. From Karmala this is a long outing rather than a quick detour, so confirm the route and allow a full day or stay a night.

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Check recent flamingo reports before you go
  • Fix boat rates and safety jackets in advance
  • Carry water, hat and binoculars
