How to reach Karnal by air

Karnal has no commercial airport of its own. Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) and Chandigarh International Airport (IXC) are each about two hours away by road, depending on traffic.

How to reach Karnal by train

Karnal Junction (KUN) is the main station, on the Delhi to Ambala line, with many trains between Delhi and cities to the north. Check current timetables with Indian Railways before booking.

How to reach Karnal by road

Karnal sits on the Grand Trunk Road (NH44) roughly midway between Delhi and Chandigarh, about 125 km from each. Buses and cabs run along this corridor; Panipat lies to the south and Kurukshetra to the north.

Getting around Karnal

Autos and e-rickshaws work in town, and cab apps operate in the larger area. For Taraori, Sitamai and Kurukshetra, hire a car with a driver for the day. Agree the route and waiting time beforehand.

Easy transfers to and in Karnal

  • Karna Lake, the Cantonment Church Tower and Gurudwara Manji Sahib are the most level, comfortable stops. Taraori and Sitamai involve uneven ground and rural roads.
  • Winter mornings can be foggy on the Grand Trunk Road; start later and avoid early drives if visibility is poor.
  • Hire a car for the day to reach Taraori, Sitamai and Kurukshetra; village roads are not easy by autos.
  • Carry water, a hat and any medication; facilities at village sites are basic.
  • For gurdwaras and temples, carry a head covering and socks for hot or cold floors.
  • Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
  • Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
  • Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
