The short answer
Best areas to stay in Kedarnath
- 01
Kedarnath town (near the temple)
Best for: Pilgrims who want to be at the temple and participate in morning and evening prayers
The main accommodation area. Pilgrim lodges, ashrams, and homestays are clustered around the temple square. Rooms are simple and basic, with shared or attached bathrooms. Hot water may not always be available. Booking ahead is essential during peak season (May–June, September–October).
- 02
Gaurikund (trek start, lower elevation)
Best for: Travellers who want to acclimatise before trekking or rest before returning home
A small town at the base of the trek, roughly 500 metres lower than Kedarnath. Hotels and homestays here are slightly more comfortable than Kedarnath. An overnight stay here helps with altitude acclimatisation. Good option if you arrive in the afternoon and do not want to trek the same day.
- 03
Ukhimath (gateway town, 45 km away by road)
Best for: Families or seniors who want more comfort before heading to Kedarnath, or a base to explore the region
A larger town with better hotels, restaurants and markets. Roughly 1–1.5 hours by car to Gaurikund. Many visitors stay here the night before starting the trek. The town is also a gateway to Tungnath and Chopta.
- 04
Chopta (hill station, 40 km away)
Best for: Seniors and families who want a comfortable base with cooler climate and easier walks
A quiet forest hill station at a good altitude with better facilities than Kedarnath. Roughly 1–1.5 hours by car to Gaurikund. If Kedarnath trekking is too demanding, Chopta offers high-altitude walks and views without the pilgrimage.
- 05
Rudraprayag (40 km away, on main road)
Best for: Road travellers who want a larger town base before heading to Kedarnath
A pilgrimage town at the confluence of two rivers. Hotels and restaurants are more numerous than Gaurikund. Roughly 1.5–2 hours by car to Gaurikund. Good for stocking up on supplies.

Before you book
What to check when booking for older travellers
- Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
- Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
- Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
- Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
- Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.

Comfort notes for Kedarnath
- Consult a doctor before attempting Kedarnath if you have heart, lung, blood pressure, or joint concerns. Altitude sickness can be serious for older travellers.
- Plan a slow trek: break it into 2 days instead of 1. Stay overnight at Gaurikund or a serai to acclimatise.
- Hire a horse or porter at Gaurikund if walking the full distance is too demanding. Costs are roughly ₹500–₹1,500 per horse per day.
- Stay in Ukhimath or Chopta the night before the trek, not at Gaurikund. The easier accommodation will help you rest and start the trek refreshed.
