Why it matters

Why Khao Sok National Park is worth your time

Khao Sok gives a different Thailand from the beach: dense rainforest, karst cliffs and still water. Wikipedia describes the forest as older and more diverse than the Amazon rainforest, and notes that the park may hold over 5 per cent of the world's species.

For a family on a week-long Khao Lak stay, it is the strongest nature option away from the coast. Take care about wildlife promises: Wikipedia notes that claims about tigers are not backed by trail-camera evidence. Go for the scenery and treat any animal sighting as a bonus.

How to experience it

Khao Sok National Park was established on 22 December 1980 and covers about 739 square kilometres in Surat Thani Province. Its centrepiece is Cheow Lan Lake, a reservoir of about 165 square kilometres created by the Ratchaprapha Dam.

From Khao Lak, Wikivoyage describes the park as about an hour away by road, but plan on a long day and book a licensed operator. Most visitors either walk the forest trails or take a longtail boat across the lake, where the limestone cliffs rise straight from the water. Wikipedia says the wet season runs from late April to December, with January and February the driest months.

Plan carefully if you travel with older relatives. A mix of forest walk and boat is a good balance, but check how many steps and how long each section is before you pay.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.
