The short answer

Machail Mata Shrine: what visitors should know first

A serious pilgrimage, not a casual visit. The yatra is arranged in summer, requires a long trek and has been disrupted by a deadly cloudburst in 2025. Check current yatra status, dates and safety directly with the district administration before planning anything.

History and context

The story behind Machail Mata Shrine

The yatra to Machail Mata is held annually. In 2025 it began on 25 July and was due to end on 5 September, but it was suspended after a cloudburst struck Chashoti around 11 am on 14 August. Casualty figures from that day varied across reports and are not repeated here.

Why it matters

Why Machail Mata Shrine is worth your time

Machail is one of the most important pilgrimages in the Jammu division, drawing very large numbers each summer; one report puts last year's total at around 300,000. The shrine is dedicated to Mata Chandi in the Paddar valley.

The 2025 cloudburst at Chashoti on 14 August, which killed many pilgrims, showed how exposed the route is. Any visit should be planned with caution and with current official advice in hand.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Plan this only after confirming that the yatra or the road is open. The journey runs from Kishtwar town into Paddar, by road to Chashoti, which is the last motorable village, and then on foot to the shrine. Allow extra days for weather and checks.

Start the trek early, carry rain gear and warm clothing, and rest often. Pace yourself and drink water; the altitude and steep sections tire many pilgrims. Use pony services only through arrangements made at the start.

On arrival, observe local custom: remove shoes, cover your head if asked and follow the queue. After darshan, descend before afternoon weather turns. Do not travel in heavy rain.

Plan with confidence

Visit as a guest, not a spectator.

  • Confirm yatra dates and safety with the district administration
  • Carry rain gear and warm layers
  • Start treks early and descend before afternoon weather
  • Avoid travel in heavy rain
  • Carry photo ID and medicines
