The short answer

Thattekad Bird Sanctuary (Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary): what visitors should know first

Go if you enjoy birds and can manage an early start and a long day. It is a proper forest outing, not a sightseeing stop. Go between October and March, hire a local guide at the forest office, and confirm access and fees locally first.

History and context

The story behind Thattekad Bird Sanctuary (Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary)

Thattekad Bird Sanctuary was established in 1983, as the first bird sanctuary in Kerala. It covers about 25.16 sq km in Kothamangalam taluka, Ernakulam district, around the Periyar river.

The ornithologist Salim Ali surveyed the area and described it as the richest bird habitat in peninsular India. It is classed as a habitat and species management area, and the sanctuary is now referred to as the Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary.

Why it matters

Why Thattekad Bird Sanctuary (Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary) is worth your time

Thattekad was established in 1983 and is usually described as the first bird sanctuary in Kerala. The ornithologist Salim Ali called it the richest bird habitat in peninsular India, and the sanctuary now carries his name in its official title. It covers about 25 sq km of moist lowland forest around a bend of the Periyar river, and its mixture of river, forest, plantation and farmland attracts a long bird list.

For a visitor it is the best way to see Kerala's birdlife in a real forest rather than a garden or a city sanctuary. Birders come for rarities such as the Ceylon frogmouth, but even a casual walker with a good guide can see hornbills, drongos, flycatchers and kingfishers. It is also a reminder that the Kochi region is more than backwaters and heritage lanes.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Start before dawn from Kochi and aim to be on the trail at first light. The route runs north on NH 49 to Kothamangalam and then on a narrower road towards Keerampara and Thattekad. There are no direct buses from Kochi; most visitors take a taxi or a bus to Kothamangalam followed by a local bus. Allow about an hour and a half for the drive.

At the forest office near the Periyar bridge, pay the entry and camera charges and ask for a local guide. Guides know where birds roost, nest and feed, and they often find species that you would walk past. The famous sightings are the Indian pitta in winter, Ceylon frogmouth, Jerdon's nightjar, Malabar grey hornbill and several kingfishers and cuckoos, but luck varies and every visit is different.

Walk slowly, speak quietly and expect to stop often. Carry binoculars, drinking water, snacks and insect repellent, and wear long sleeves and closed shoes. Leeches are common in wet weather. If you want a second day, there are forest bungalows and private stays near the sanctuary; book ahead.

  • Leave Kochi before dawn to reach the trail at first light
