Why it matters

Why Pillar Rocks is worth your time

Pillar Rocks are a geological formation—three pillars of exposed rock where erosion has worn away the surrounding slope. They are one of the most photographed landmarks in Kodaikanal and appear in many old colonial photographs and travel writing. They symbolise the Palani range's stone skeleton beneath the forest cover.

The viewpoint was developed by the British as one of Kodaikanal's main tourist draws, and it remains so. The site is also important for the shola forests on the slopes below, which are now protected because of their ecological value.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Drive to the car park at Pillar Rocks. From there, a path climbs steeply for five minutes to a flat area with viewing platforms and benches. The three pillars are across a valley, rising abruptly from dense forest. They look different from different angles: from the main platform they are aligned; move left and you see their depth and the sheer rock faces.

The pillars themselves cannot be reached by a general walking path; the forest is too thick. The experience is viewing them from the designated vantage points. You can spend as little as 15 minutes (look, photograph, leave) or linger on a bench with a book and the view. Many families bring a packed snack.

The slopes below the viewpoint are home to shola forest—high-altitude grassland mixed with small gnarled trees. On a clear morning, you may see movement in the forest below, but wildlife is shy. Birdwatchers sometimes spend longer here.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Go early to avoid crowds and get clear photos
  • The path to the viewpoint is steep; wear shoes with grip
  • Benches at the top are good for a rest and snack
  • Bring a zoom lens for better detail of the rocks
  • The area can be misty in late afternoon; morning is better
