Why it matters
Why Diving at Hin Daeng and Hin Muang is worth your time
For serious divers, Lanta's value is its location. It is the nearest island to some of the best open-water sites in the Andaman Sea, and a stay of several nights lets you pick the best days for the deepest dives.
It is a niche choice. For families and older travellers who do not dive, it is a reason to look elsewhere, but for a diving enthusiast in the party, it is the strongest argument for choosing Lanta over Ao Nang.

How to experience it
Wikivoyage notes there are no dive sites on Lanta itself, but the island is the closest base for Hin Daeng, Hin Muang and Ko Haa, with Hin Daeng noted for steep, deep walls and reported whale shark sightings. Day trips usually start early from the pier and take a couple of hours each way, so plan on a full day.
If you are certified, choose a dive centre with a clear safety record, up-to-date equipment and small groups. If you are not, ask about introductory courses, but keep expectations realistic: the deepest sites are for experienced divers. Non-diving companions can snorkel in the shallower Ko Haa area on a separate boat or stay at the beach.
Dress for the sun and sea, bring motion-sickness remedies if you need them and keep evenings light. Dive operators need good weather, so build slack into the schedule.
Plan with confidence
Event-led places reward a little planning.
