The short answer

Sairee Beach: what visitors should know first

Yes, this is where most visitors base themselves and where you will spend at least an evening. Come for the sunset and the relaxed sand, but expect dive-school bustle and evening noise towards the south and centre.

History and context

The story behind Sairee Beach

Sairee is the island's largest beach. Wikipedia describes a white-sand beach of about 1.7 km broken up by large granite boulders, with mid-range resorts and restaurants. Koh Tao's tourism began with backpackers in the 1980s and became dive-led in the 1990s, and Sairee grew with it.

Why it matters

Why Sairee Beach is worth your time

Sairee is the logical base for a first visit because almost everything the island offers starts from here: dive schools, snorkel trips, restaurants, massage shops and a pharmacy or two. It is also the best place to feel Koh Tao's character, which is a dive island first and a beach resort second.

Its value for families is convenience: you can walk from a resort to dinner without hiring a bike. For seniors the trade-off is noise and the soft sand, so choose a hotel at the quieter northern end, ask for a ground-floor room, and keep the evenings gentle.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    Walk the Brick Road

The pedestrian path behind the beach links cafes, dive shops and bars and is the easiest stroll on the island.

  2. 02

    Sunset on the sand

The beach faces west across the Gulf, so sunsets are the main evening event.

  3. 03

    Choose your end

Stay north for calm, south or centre for nightlife and the widest choice of food.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Treat Sairee as the island's high street. By day, walk the pedestrian stretch behind the beach that locals and visitors call the Brick Road, stop for coffee or a fresh juice, and watch the long-tail and dive boats. The sea is usually calm enough for a gentle paddle, but check conditions with your resort, especially in the wetter months.

Towards evening, move to the sand for the sunset, which faces the open Gulf of Thailand. The north end is quieter and suits older travellers; the south and centre carry the bars and nightlife. If you do not dive, you can still join a half-day snorkelling boat from here or walk to the nearby boulder bay linked to King Chulalongkorn's 1899 visit.

Plan meals early if you want quiet. Most menus are Thai, Western and seafood-led, so Indian vegetarian diners should ask kitchens for vegetable dishes without fish sauce or oyster sauce, and carry snacks.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Pick a quieter northern stay if you want calm evenings
  • Check sea conditions before swimming, especially from October to December
  • Carry cash for small cafes and check card acceptance first
  • Ask about private beach access charges before walking through resort land

FAQs

Is Sairee Beach good for older travellers?

It is the easiest area for dining and walking, but the sand is soft and the south is noisy at night. A northern hotel with a ground-floor room is the most comfortable choice.

Can I swim at Sairee?

Many visitors do, but conditions vary by season and wind. Ask your resort about the sea that day, and use a lifejacket if you are not a confident swimmer.

Is there Indian food at Sairee?

There is at least one Indian restaurant reported opposite Sairee Plaza, but it is not a vegetarian specialist. Check it is open and ask about vegetarian dishes.
