Why it matters
Why Mount Saramati Trek is worth your time
Saramati is the high point of the Naga Hills and forms a natural boundary between India and Myanmar. With a topographic prominence of about 2,885 m, it is one of the ultra-prominent peaks of Southeast Asia.
Few outsiders make the journey, so the trek still depends on Thanamir's goodwill, guides and porters. Hiring locally and keeping the route clean supports a village that has only recently started to see trekkers.

How to experience it
Thanamir lies near the Myanmar border in Kiphire district, about 57 km beyond Pungro. From Kohima the usual road goes via Meluri; travellers report about 7 to 8 hours at best, with long unsealed stretches, and high-clearance vehicles are needed. From Dimapur to Pungro is about 350 km. Plan a rest day in Thanamir before starting.
Day one is a walk of about 7 hours from Thanamir to the base camp through dense forest with steep ups and downs and almost no water on the way. The base camp has two simple wooden huts, one used as a kitchen and shelter for guides and porters. The summit climb starts at around 2 to 3 am and takes about 4 to 6 hours through rhododendron forest to an exposed, windy ridge and the top at about 3,826 m (12,552 ft); some sources give 3,841 m.
The round trip from Thanamir takes at least three days. The village authority provides two guides, paid by the group, and porters can be hired.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
- Get the Nagaland Inner Line Permit before travel
- Check in with the administration and police at Pungro or Kiphire
- Hire guides and porters through the Thanamir village authority
- Carry enough water from the village; there is almost none on the trail
- Allow spare days for road delays
- Acclimatise for a day or two in Kohima first

Timing, access and comfort
- Area
- Thanamir village, Kiphire district, on the India–Myanmar border; a long day's drive from Kohima
- Time needed
- At least 3 days from Thanamir; about a week from Dimapur or Guwahati
- Best time
- September to March; September for flowers, December and January for snow
- Walking level
- Demanding
- Senior comfort
- Getting there is itself hard: a long drive on partly unsealed roads to a frontier village with basic facilities. The trek has steep forest climbs with little water, a cold night at base camp and a summit push that starts in the early hours on an exposed ridge. Older travellers should not attempt it, and this is not a trip to bring parents along on; Kapamodzü near Pfutsero gives a view of the Saramati range from a road-accessible summit instead.
- Tickets and access
- Visitors from outside Nagaland need a Nagaland Inner Line Permit. Report to the local administration and police at Pungro or Kiphire before going to Thanamir; foreign nationals need additional permission and should check current Protected Area Permit rules. Guides are provided through the Thanamir village authority and entry fees are paid at the start. Confirm current fees locally.
