How to experience it
The temple sits on the Adi Ganga, an old channel of the Hooghly River. Enter through the main gate into a courtyard thronged with pilgrims, beggars and flower vendors. The energy is vivid and sometimes overwhelming if you are not used to Indian pilgrimage spaces.
Lock your bags in the storage area near the entrance and leave shoes with a counter keeper. Walk through the courtyard past subsidiary shrines and small shops selling flowers, coconuts, and incense. The queue to reach the inner sanctum moves slowly, as priests perform rituals and you wait your turn.
Inside, the image of Kali—dark, fierce, bedecked with flowers—is the focus. You will be ushered past quickly so others can take their turn. The moment of sight, or darshan, is often brief but intense. Afterwards, circumambulate the inner sanctum if you wish, and return to the courtyard to sit quietly for a moment, taking in what you have experienced.
The Adi Ganga Ghat on the temple's south side is where many pilgrims bathe. This is a functioning pilgrimage space, not a museum.
