How to experience it
The museum occupies Brij Vilas, a three-storey palace set in the Chatra Vilas Garden. In the central courtyard stand four Yupa pillars of the third century, with inscriptions in Brahmi script. They were brought from a site in Baran district.
The best-known object is a Sheshashayi Vishnu sculpture from Baroli, showing Vishnu reclining on the serpent Shesh with Brahma emerging from a lotus at his navel. Other rooms hold Shaiva, Vaishnava and Jain sculpture, folk sculpture, prehistoric finds, weapons, miniature paintings and royal wax seals. A heavy sword and other objects add variety.
Allow one to two hours. The museum is least crowded in the late afternoon, and it is an ideal stop after lunch, when the heat outside is at its worst. Ask about photography rules at the counter, since reports differ.
