How to experience it
Report at the Karikaiyur trekking shed for the morning start (8 am at the time of writing). The shed is about 22 km from Kotagiri by a quiet road off the usual tourist circuit; arrange a car from Kotagiri.
The route is about 4 km each way and takes about 4 hours in total. Walkers describe it in three parts: a steep climb into the forest, a gentler middle section, and a long run of steep steps to the top. The forest changes from moist deciduous to shola and grassland as you climb. The viewpoint on top, at about 2,000 m (6,562 ft), looks over forested hills and valleys.
The slopes are carpeted with dry leaves in the dry season, which can be slippery, so wear shoes with grip and use a stick if you have one. Elephant signs are common on the trail; follow the guide's instructions.
