Kottayam leads Kerala in rubber, and the Rubber Board is headquartered here; the landscape of tapped trees outside town is the clearest way to see it.

The short answer

Rubber Plantation Country: what visitors should know first

Worth an hour as a drive or stop rather than a destination. Go early, when tappers work, and do not expect a formal plantation tour: I could not verify one. Ask your hotel or driver for a roadside stop and always seek permission before entering private estates.

History and context

The story behind Rubber Plantation Country

The Indian Rubber Board was created under the Rubber (Production and Marketing) Act, 1947, and renamed The Rubber Board in 1954. It is a statutory body under India's Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The Rubber Research Institute of India was established in 1955 at Puthuppally, about eight km from Kottayam town.

Why it matters

Why Rubber Plantation Country is worth your time

Kerala Tourism notes that Kottayam leads the state in rubber plantation area and production, and the Rubber Board, set up under the Rubber (Production and Marketing) Act of 1947, is headquartered here. It is easy to overlook, but this industry shaped the town's wealth, its hill villages and its tidy estate landscape.

Seeing it gives context to the other sights: the printing presses, the schools and the churches grew in a district whose farming economy supported them.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    Early-morning tapping

Tappers work at first light, cutting trunks so latex runs into cups.

  2. 02

    The estate landscape

Rows of trees with spiral cuts and collection cups define the district's hills.

  3. 03

    The Rubber Board

The board's headquarters is in Kottayam, and its research institute is at Puthuppally.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Rubber is what built modern Kottayam's economy: the district leads in area and production, and the Rubber Board has its headquarters in the town. You see the trade in the landscape. Ask your driver to take a minor road out of town in the early morning, when the tappers cut the trees and the latex runs into cups.

Stop only where it is safe and ask permission before walking into an estate. The trees stand in neat rows with cut spirals on their trunks and small cups at the base, and in the wet season you will also see plastic rain guards on the trunks. Some homestays and farms on the outskirts of Kottayam show visitors around; ask rather than assume.

The Rubber Research Institute of India was established in 1955 on a hillock at Puthuppally, about eight km from town. I could not confirm that it welcomes casual visitors, so contact the Rubber Board before planning around it.
