The short answer
Borneo Cultures Museum: what visitors should know first
Yes, if you want to understand Sarawak before you visit the longhouses and parks. Plan two hours, go when it opens to avoid the heat, and check current opening hours and any ticket rules on the museum's own channels before you travel.
History and context
The story behind Borneo Cultures Museum
The museum was built on the site of the demolished Dewan Tun Abdul Razak as part of the Sarawak Museum Campus project, and opened on 9 March 2022. Its design draws on traditional Sarawak craft motifs and echoes the nearby State Legislative Assembly building.
The collection of the older Sarawak Museum, the first museum on Borneo, supplies one of the exhibitions.

Why it matters
Why Borneo Cultures Museum is worth your time
Kuching's museum tradition goes back to the Brooke era, and the Borneo Cultures Museum is the state's attempt to present that collection in a modern building. It opened to the public on 9 March 2022 after a delay from the pandemic, at a reported cost of RM323 million, and is described as the largest museum in Malaysia.
For a visitor from India, it is the clearest single introduction to a place whose history is quite different from the Peninsula's. Sarawak's communities, rivers and forests shape everything you will see afterwards, from the market stalls to the longhouse performances, and this is where those stories are explained at length in one building.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Start on the upper floors and work down, so you finish near the exit and shop. The galleries are arranged by theme: one for children built around Sarawak's rivers, one on how coastal, rainforest and highland communities live with nature, one on human settlement from the Palaeolithic period onward, and one showing selected objects from the older Sarawak Museum collection. An arts and crafts gallery holds workshops and performances when scheduled.
Give the settlement gallery your attention if you plan to visit Bako or the Cultural Village afterwards, because it explains who lived where and why. If you are travelling with children, the river gallery is the easiest way to keep them engaged for an hour while adults read the longer labels.
The museum is large, so decide before you enter whether you want a full tour or only two galleries. A short visit with a rest in the cafe area, if one is open, is better than a rushed full circuit. Pair it with a walk along the Kuching Waterfront afterwards, which is a short ride away.
