Why it matters

Why Kumara Parvatha Trek is worth your time

Kumara Parvatha is the peak in the temple's own legend, where Kumaraswamy is said to have fought the demons Tharaka and Shura Padmasura. For trekkers, it gives a physical dimension to a story that otherwise lives only inside the temple.

It is also one of the better-known trekking routes in this section of the Western Ghats, which brings adventure travellers to a village otherwise centred on pilgrimage. Anyone attempting it should treat it with respect: it is a long, remote route and the conditions change fast with the weather.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Treat this as a serious mountain trek, not a pilgrim's stroll. Guides vary on the distance, with sources quoting roughly 13 km one way and others longer for the round trip, and the peak is commonly given as about 1,700 metres. Plan for at least one full day, and many groups camp overnight. Go with a registered guide, and confirm permits and any group size limits before you travel.

October to February is the usual season, with cooler weather and lower leech risk than the monsoon. Carry water, snacks, rain protection, sturdy shoes and basic first aid. The Deccan Chronicle piece notes the trek can be strenuous for first-timers who are not physically fit, and warns about leeches.

If the group includes children, older relatives or anyone unwell, stay in the village and enjoy the hills from the temple area. The ridge is visible from many points around Subramanya.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Book a registered guide and confirm permits
  • Start before dawn and carry plenty of water
  • Avoid the monsoon and summer
  • Do not attempt with children or unwell family members
