Easy transfers to and in Kumbakonam

  • Carry a thin cloth or socks if the temple permits them, and use shaded edges of courtyards. Footwear is left outside, so keep an easy-to-remove pair of sandals.
  • Hire a car and driver for Darasuram, Swamimalai and Thirunageswaram. Autos suit short hops within the old town.
  • Choose a hotel with a lift and easy car access; old-town lanes are narrow and busy.
  • Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
  • Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
  • Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
