The short answer

Kasi Viswanathar Temple: what visitors should know first

Yes, if you want the Mahamaham story told in stone. Allow 30 to 45 minutes, visit with the tank, and dress modestly. It is quiet, shaded and close to the tank.

History and context

The story behind Kasi Viswanathar Temple

The deity is praised in the 7th-century Tevaram, making the temple a Paadal Petra Sthalam. The present masonry structure was built in the Nayak period in the 16th century.

The temple covers about two acres, with two gopurams, of which the seven-tier western tower is about 72 feet high. The Masi Magam festival, in February to March, is the most prominent celebration.

Why it matters

Why Kasi Viswanathar Temple is worth your time

This temple matters because it makes the Mahamaham legend visible. Many pilgrims visit the tank for the ritual bath, but at Kasi Viswanathar they can pay their respects to the nine rivers in their own shrine. It is the temple that explains why the water is thought to carry the power of all of them.

It is also a Paadal Petra Sthalam, praised in the Tevaram hymns, and the present buildings date from the Nayak period, when the town's temples were rebuilt on a grander scale. A visit is brief, but it adds understanding to the larger sights nearby.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Visit this temple straight after the Mahamaham tank, since the two belong together. The complex has two gopurams, of which the western is tallest, with seven tiers rising to about 72 feet. Inside, the main shrine is to Kasi Viswanathar and Visalakshi, but the interest here is the Navakanniyar shrine, where the nine river goddesses are shown: Ganga, Yamuna, Narmada, Saraswati, Kaveri, Godavari, Krishna, Tungabhadra and Sarayu.

The story is that these nine rivers, burdened by the sins that pilgrims washed away in them, were told by Shiva to bathe in the Mahamaham tank to be cleansed. Seeing the goddesses in this temple makes that tradition concrete, and priests are usually glad to explain it.

From here, Adi Kumbeswarar Temple is a short walk, and Sarangapani Temple a little further. This is a good short stop in a temple morning.

Plan with confidence

Visit as a guest, not a spectator.

  • Visit with the Mahamaham tank
