Why it matters

Why Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary is worth your time

The sanctuary covers about 610 sq km across the Aravalli range, with a core zone of around 225 sq km and a surrounding buffer. It protects the forest and the species that depend on it, and it surrounds the fort, which is why the fort and the wilderness feel connected.

It is also one of the places in Rajasthan where wolves and leopards share habitat with villages. About twenty villages sit inside it, so the safari passes ordinary rural life. That makes it a more realistic view of the Aravallis than a fenced park.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Safaris are arranged from Kumbhalgarh village or nearby Kelwara, and your hotel can usually book a jeep and eco-guide. Rounds are commonly held in the early morning and in the afternoon. The best known route is about 15 km towards Thandi Beri and takes around three and a half hours there and back.

Go with realistic expectations. This is not a tiger reserve with habituated animals. Leopards, sloth bears, wolves, nilgai, sambar and four-horned antelope live here, but sightings depend on luck and patience. Birdlife is often rewarding, with grey junglefowl and raptors among the species recorded.

Dress in muted colours, carry water and a light jacket for winter mornings, and keep quiet. If the monsoon has just ended, tracks can be rough. Check with your hotel on the current round timings and whether any routes are closed.
