The short answer

Rollapadu Wildlife Sanctuary: what visitors should know first

Go if you enjoy open grassland, birdwatching and blackbuck, and accept that the critically endangered great Indian bustard may not appear. It is roughly 55 to 60 km from Kurnool, so hire a car, start early and keep expectations modest.

History and context

The story behind Rollapadu Wildlife Sanctuary

The sanctuary was established in 1988 and covers about 6.14 square kilometres of undulating plain in Nandyal district, near the Karnataka border. It sits at an elevation of about 290 metres, with hot, dry conditions and erratic rainfall of around 450 mm a year.

The great Indian bustard was the main reason for protection. Accounts also list around 130 bird species and migratory visitors at the nearby Alganur reservoir. The lesser florican, once present, is no longer reported.

Why it matters

Why Rollapadu Wildlife Sanctuary is worth your time

The great Indian bustard is one of India's most threatened birds, and Rollapadu was designated specifically to protect it and its grassland habitat. The sanctuary is small, only about 6 square kilometres, but it protects a type of dry plain that is rarely given conservation status, since grasslands are often treated as wasteland and converted to farms.

Visiting is a way to see that habitat for yourself. It is also a good reminder that not every sanctuary offers dependable wildlife viewing: Rollapadu rewards patience and a willingness to look at the grassland itself, including blackbuck and the many birds that use it.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    Blackbuck herds

The sanctuary is reported to hold several hundred blackbuck, which are the most reliable large animals to see.

  2. 02

    Great Indian bustard habitat

Even without a sighting, the open plain explains why this critically endangered bird needs protected grassland.

  3. 03

    Grassland birds

The area is reported to support over a hundred bird species, with more visiting the nearby reservoir.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Rollapadu is a flat, open grassland with scattered scrub, and the way to enjoy it is slowly. Aim to arrive soon after the gate opens or in the last hours of daylight, when birds and blackbuck are most active and the heat is bearable. A vehicle, preferably the one you hired, is the practical way to cover the roads around the sanctuary, and a watchtower is a good place to scan the plain with binoculars.

The great Indian bustard is the reason the sanctuary exists, but it is critically endangered and rarely seen, so treat any sighting as a bonus. Blackbuck are more likely: the sanctuary has been reported to hold several hundred, and the males are easy to recognise by their spiralled horns. Watch for foxes, jackals and grassland birds, and ask the forest staff if a guide is available.

Bring water, snacks, a hat and binoculars. There is little in the way of food stalls nearby, and mobile coverage can be patchy. Because roads are rural and sometimes rough, plan to be back on the highway before dusk.
