Why it matters
Why Margaret's Deck Tea Lounge is worth your time
Tea lounges on tea gardens are a feature of the Darjeeling hills, and Margaret's Deck is one of the better-known ones near Kurseong. It gives visitors who cannot manage a factory tour a way to sit at the edge of a plantation, taste a pot of Darjeeling and understand where it comes from.
The lounge overlooks Margaret's Hope, an estate owned by Goodricke, which gives the tea an explicit place on the slope you are looking at. For many visitors it is the simplest tea experience on the Kurseong road.

How to experience it
Margaret's Deck sits on the main road between Darjeeling and Kurseong, about eight and a half kilometres before the market in Kurseong when you are coming from the Darjeeling side. Plan it as a break in the journey rather than a destination: you can reach it by taxi or on the way between the two towns.
The point is the deck, a roofed terrace that looks over the Margaret's Hope tea garden. Ask for a pot of Darjeeling, wait for it to brew, and let the view do the rest. Margaret's Hope is a Goodricke garden, and the surrounding slopes are a good way to see how steep the plantations are.
Sit for a while with a pot rather than a quick cup. If you want food, ask what is on offer that day, and avoid planning a heavy meal here. On clear days it is also a good place to rest if you are coming up from the plains and the road has been long.
Plan with confidence
