Why it matters

Why Sri Krishna Museum is worth your time

The museum gives context that the shrines do not. Kurukshetra's sites are about stories, and the galleries show how artists across India have pictured those stories in sculpture, painting and folk art. Seeing a Madhubani or Pattachitra rendition of Krishna next to a stone sculpture shows how widely the figure is imagined.

It is also one of the few places where a visitor with no religious interest can still learn something concrete about the epic's place in Indian art. That is valuable for mixed groups where some travellers prefer galleries to temples.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    The dioramas

Scenes from Krishna's life that engage younger visitors.

  2. 02

    Miniatures and murals

Slower pieces that reward a careful look.

  3. 03

    Folk art gallery

Pattachitra, Madhubani paintings and Raslila figures.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Go through the galleries in order. The first covers wooden, ivory and metal artefacts; the second archaeological finds; then miniature paintings and manuscripts, followed by dioramas of Krishna's life, Mahabharata murals, and a sixth gallery with Pattachitra and Madhubani paintings plus leather puppets and Manipuri Raslila figures.

The dioramas are the easiest entry for children, and the murals and miniatures reward slower looking. The museum also has sound displays and a walk-through maze, so expect a mix of traditional exhibits and more theatrical ones. A multimedia gallery on the Mahabharata and Gita has been added by the state tourism department.

The museum sits beside the Panorama and Science Centre, so pair the two. A museum visit also gives a break from heat and crowds before an evening at the sarovar.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.
