The short answer

Best areas to stay in Kushinagar

  1. 01

Main temple neighbourhood (near Mahaparinirvana Temple)

Best for: Pilgrims and travellers who want to walk to the main site and hear the temple rhythm

Most budget and mid-range hotels are here, within 100–300 metres of the main temple. You can reach the site on foot within minutes, hear the dawn sounds and evening quiet, and be part of the pilgrimage pulse. The trade-off is noise from occasional vehicles and loudspeakers. Hotels here range from very basic (spartan rooms, shared bathrooms) to modest with private bathrooms and basic hot water.

  2. 02

Kushinagar town centre (near the bazaar and bus stand)

Best for: Travellers who want town amenities and easier access to taxis and trains

A 10–15 minute walk or short taxi ride from the temple. Here you will find more restaurants, shops, and government services. Hotels are more modern and may have better amenities like air-conditioning and reliable hot water. Less immediately atmospheric than the temple area, but more practical for families with varying schedules.

  3. 03

Gorakhpur (day visit or overnight base)

Best for: Travellers who need better infrastructure and want to visit Kushinagar as a day trip

About 50–60 km away, roughly 1.5–2 hours by road. Gorakhpur is a larger city with more hotels, better hospitals, and more dining options. Some choose to base themselves here and visit Kushinagar for a day, returning for a familiar hotel. An alternative for seniors who want comfort but still wish to experience the pilgrimage site.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.

For parents and senior travellers

Comfort notes for Kushinagar

  • The Mahaparinirvana Temple has a level, paved approach and level floors inside. The reclining Buddha is at eye level in a cool, dark hall—ideal for those with mobility concerns.
  • Visit the main temple early (6–7 a.m.) or late (4–5 p.m.) to avoid midday heat and the small afternoon pilgrim crowds. The morning light in the temple is very peaceful.
  • Hire a taxi for the full day rather than walking between temples. The town's distances are manageable, but the heat in warm months and uneven ground on some paths make a vehicle prudent.
  • Choose a hotel very close to the temple (within 200 metres) to minimize walks at dawn or in hot afternoons. Fatigue from heat affects older travellers sharply.

How are the hotels in Kushinagar?

They range from very basic budget hotels near the temple to modest 3-star properties in town and a few better-equipped hotels in Gorakhpur. Wifi and hot water are standard in mid-range places.
