Easy transfers to and in Lake Toba
- Choose a ground-floor room, since many cottages and guesthouses have steps and uneven paths. Ask for a car transfer to the door.
- Carry your regular medicines and travel insurance. Clinics are sparse and an ambulance can take hours depending on location, so keep Medan as your fallback.
- Break the Medan to Parapat road trip into stops; it can take 3 to 4 hours or more, with winding sections and slow traffic.
- Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
- Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
- Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
