The short answer

Kavaratti Island: what visitors should know first

Yes, if you want one island with a bit of everything. Kavaratti has the territory's capital, an easy lagoon, a mosque and aquarium within walking distance, and diving offered from the island. Arrive with an approved permit and book your stay through the official tourism channels.

History and context

The story behind Kavaratti Island

Kavaratti became the capital of the Union Territory when the administrative headquarters moved here in 1964. The 2011 census recorded a population of 11,221, and the official island page notes that it has the highest share of non-islander residents.

Why it matters

Why Kavaratti Island is worth your time

Kavaratti has been the seat of administration since 1964, which gives it more shops, offices and services than the other tourist islands. That makes it the most practical stop for a first visit, particularly for families and older travellers who want a doctor, a mosque and a market within a short ride.

It is also the best place to understand island life. Lakshadweep is overwhelmingly Muslim and tightly knit, and the small population lives on a narrow strip of land between the sea and a lagoon. A day here explains why entry is regulated and why visitors are asked to dress modestly and respect local customs.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    The lagoon

Calm water protected by the reef, used for swimming, kayaking and glass-bottom boat rides.

  2. 02

    Ujra Mosque

A 17th-century mosque with a richly carved ceiling, a short walk from the aquarium.

  3. 03

    Sunset at the jetty

The eastern embarkation jetty is a quiet place to watch the day end and the ships come in.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Treat Kavaratti as a slow island rather than a checklist. Spend the first morning walking from the jetty area to the Ujra Mosque and the aquarium, which are a few minutes apart, and notice how the island is laid out: narrow lanes, coconut palms, low houses and a lagoon on one side. Early morning, before the heat builds, is the most pleasant time.

The lagoon is the main attraction. Official tourism material lists swimming, kayaking, wind surfing and canoeing in the lagoon, glass-bottom boat trips over the coral, and scuba diving and snorkelling off the Chicken Neck point. Glass-bottom boats suit older travellers well, as you stay dry and seated.

Food is Malabar-style, with a lot of fish, especially tuna, and coconut. Keep one evening free to watch the sun go down from the eastern jetty. Alcohol is not available on most islands, so plan accordingly.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Apply for your entry permit well before you travel
  • List Kavaratti and every transit island in the application
  • Dress modestly when walking through the settlement
  • Carry regular medicines and cash for small purchases

Tickets and access
Everyone who is not a native of the islands needs an entry permit, applied for online in advance and listing the islands you will visit.
