Why it matters

Why Kerisik Restaurant, Laman Padi is worth your time

Many Langkawi restaurants cook for the beach crowd. Kerisik is named repeatedly as the place to eat Malay rice-and-side-dish food in a setting that suits the island's rice-growing past. Four of the guides we opened, including a national newspaper, name it.

It is not a vegetarian restaurant. The sets built around prawns, chicken and beef are the headline items, although ulam and sambal belacan are part of the meal. Vegetarian families should call ahead and ask whether a meat-free rice-and-vegetables plate can be made, and should not assume the kitchen is separate.

How to experience it

The New Straits Times describes four rice sets named Tuba, Padang Lalang, Sunda and Kedawang, sized from two people up to six. It recommends the Padang Lalang set, which it lists with Minang-style prawn rendang, herb-marinated fried chicken, spiced smoked beef, ulam (raw herbs and greens) and sambal belacan. Menus change, so ask what is in each set today.

Food arrives on a dulang, a traditional serving tray, and the idea is to share. Wahdah lists a different set menu with fried prawns, grilled lamb chop, fried squid and daging berlado with nasi sunda, so the offering varies between visits.

Arrive when you can pair the meal with a walk around the Laman Padi rice garden, since the restaurant sits inside the same grounds. Mid-morning heat is lower than at noon, so a late lunch after the walk is gentler on elders.

Plan with confidence

Small checks that make a better meal.

  • Book the platform seating at busy times
  • Ask whether a vegetarian plate is possible
  • Check which set is on the menu
  • Visit the rice garden before or after the meal
