Plan 01

1 day in Latur

  1. 01

Day 1: Ausa, Kharosa and Ganj Golai

Leave early for Ausa Fort, about 20 km away, and walk the walls and moat in the cool of the morning. Continue on the Latur–Nilanga road to the Kharosa Caves, about 45 km from the city, for an hour or so among the carvings. Return to Latur for lunch and rest, then spend the evening at Ganj Golai, the circular market around the Jagdamba temple, when the lanes are busiest.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Ausa Fort1.5 to 2 hoursModerateOctober to February, early morning
Kharosa Caves1 to 1.5 hours on site; a half-day with the driveModerateOctober to February, morning

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Ausa Fort: The walk along the ramparts is uneven, shaded only in patches and has little seating. Older visitors can stay near the entrance, the first bastions and the cannons instead of doing the full circuit.

With parents at Kharosa Caves: Cars can reach the caves on the hill's left flank, which shortens the walk, but there are steps and uneven rock inside. Shade is limited and seating is basic.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Latur trip for parents and children

  • Hire a car and driver for the forts and caves; public transport is infrequent and the sights are spread out.
  • Plan outdoor sights for the first part of the day. The plateau gets very hot from March to May and shade is thin at the forts.
  • Ganj Golai and the Siddheshwar and Ratneshwar temple are the easiest sights; Ausa, Udgir and Kharosa involve uneven ground and some climbing.
  • Carry water, a hat, medicines and snacks; shops and toilets are sparse near the forts and caves.
  • Keep days short: the drive to Udgir and back is long, so pair it with a morning start and a rest day afterwards.
  • Heat: March to May daytime highs reach about 38 degrees. Do outdoor sights before 10 am and rest indoors through the afternoon.
