How to experience it
This is a full-day journey from Leh. Drive north from Leh through Khalsar and over Khardung La, one of the world's highest motorable passes. The road climbs steeply, offering views over the Leh plain. On the far side, the road descends into the Nubra Valley—a green oasis of poplar trees and cultivation surrounded by barren mountains.
Diskit Monastery sits on a hillside above the town. Park in the village and climb the stone path to the monastery complex. The main assembly hall has murals and a central Buddha shrine. The newer golden Buddha statue stands on the hillside above the monastery, visible from across the valley. The walk up to it is steep; most visitors stay in the main monastery and view it from a distance.
Return to Leh the same day or stay overnight in the Nubra Valley, which offers homestays and guesthouses. The valley is also home to double-humped Bactrian camels, which local guides can arrange to see.
