How to reach Lohaghat by air

The main plains airport is Pantnagar (PGH), which Wikipedia lists with IndiGo service to Delhi, but it is a long road journey from Lohaghat, so check current schedules. Naini Saini airport near Pithoragarh lies about 65 km away, though scheduled service should be confirmed before planning around it.

How to reach Lohaghat by train

Tanakpur (TPU) is the nearest railhead, on the North Eastern Railway, about 85 to 90 km by road. Wikipedia lists trains including a Jan Shatabdi service and a Delhi express, but check current timetables on the railway's official channels.

How to reach Lohaghat by road

Lohaghat lies on the route from Tanakpur towards Pithoragarh, about 60 km from Pithoragarh and 13 to 14 km from Champawat. Almora is about 120 km away. Hill roads are winding and can be affected by landslides in the monsoon.

Getting around Lohaghat

Buses run to Lohaghat, but local sights such as Mayawati, Abbott Mount and Banasur Fort need a hired or shared taxi. Agree timings and the return trip in advance, and avoid driving after dark.

For parents and senior travellers

Easy transfers to and in Lohaghat

  • Plan one sight a day and rest after lunch; the roads are winding and the altitude is around 1,750 m.
  • Carry a warm layer all year; mornings and evenings are cold, and Abbott Mount at about 2,100 m is cooler still.
  • Hire a driver who knows the hill roads and agree timings; avoid driving after dark, especially in the monsoon.
  • Check weather and road reports during July and August, when landslides can close routes.
  • Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
  • Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
  • Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
