The short answer

Mandalika International Street Circuit: what visitors should know first

Go only if racing interests you or you are in Lombok during an event. Outside race weekends there is little to see beyond the outer roads, so it works as a short stop on a south-coast day, not a reason for the trip.

History and context

The story behind Mandalika International Street Circuit

The circuit was inaugurated by President Joko Widodo on 12 November 2021, with construction having begun in October 2019, according to Wikipedia. The track is 4.301 km long with 17 turns, and it has hosted World Superbike and World Supersport (2021 to 2023), the Indonesian motorcycle Grand Prix and several regional series.

Why it matters

Why Mandalika International Street Circuit is worth your time

The circuit is the most visible sign of how Lombok's south coast is being reshaped. It is the centrepiece of the Mandalika resort zone, and its opening in 2021 put the island on the international motorsport calendar. For Indian visitors who follow MotoGP or Superbikes, it offers a chance to watch a world-level event in a setting that is far cheaper and more relaxed than most European rounds.

For everyone else it is context. Seeing a modern street circuit set between rice fields, fishing villages and white beaches explains why the south coast has new roads, hotels and airport capacity, and why prices and traffic in Kuta are rising. A short visit helps you understand what you are seeing along the rest of the coast.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    The street track

The outer roads are the simplest way to see the layout when no event is running.

  2. 02

    Race weekends

A MotoGP or Superbike weekend is a major event for the whole south coast and needs early booking.

  3. 03

    Merese view

The hill above Tanjung Aan gives a clear view of the circuit and the coastline around it.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

On an ordinary day, treat the circuit as a roadside stop. The outer street track is the part open to the public, according to Wikipedia, and it is worth a few minutes for the scale of the place and the views toward the sea and the hills at Kuta. Combine it with Bukit Merese, from where the whole layout is visible, and Tanjung Aan, which is close by.

If you want to see racing, plan around the calendar. The circuit has hosted the Indonesian motorcycle Grand Prix, historically in October, plus regional championships and GT racing. Dates change, so confirm on the official event pages. Book hotels in Kuta or Praya months ahead, since rooms and drivers fill quickly, and arrive early on each day.

On a race weekend, dress for sun and rain, carry water and ear protection, and agree a meeting point with your group, as phone signal can be patchy in crowds.

Plan with confidence

Event-led places reward a little planning.

  • Check the official race calendar before booking flights
  • Book hotels and a driver months ahead for events
  • Carry water, sun protection and ear protection
  • Confirm local access rules for non-event days
