The short answer

Senggigi Beach: what visitors should know first

A practical base or half-day stop, rather than a beach to rave about. Senggigi is closer to Mataram's hospitals and the Rinjani and Gili ferries than the south coast, and sunsets are good. Choose it for convenience, not for the best sand.

History and context

The story behind Senggigi Beach

Senggigi became Lombok's main tourist area, with a building boom in the late 1990s. Communal violence in 2000 and the 2002 Bali bombing caused tourist numbers to fall and many projects to stop, per Wikipedia. It has since been overtaken by Kuta and the north-western Gili islands.

Why it matters

Why Senggigi Beach is worth your time

Senggigi was Lombok's main tourist strip, according to Wikipedia, with a building boom in the late 1990s after talk that Lombok would be the next Bali. Communal violence in 2000 and the 2002 Bali bombing hurt it badly, and it has since fallen behind Kuta and the Gilis in popularity.

That history makes it a more modest and practical place today. It has older hotels, a long coast road, shops and restaurants, and it is closer to Mataram and its hospitals than the south coast. For older travellers or families who value medical access, that is a real advantage. It rewards modest expectations and a flexible plan.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Treat Senggigi as a stretch of coast, not a single sight. Walk the beachfront in the late afternoon, when the heat eases, and watch the sun set over the Lombok Strait. On clear evenings, Commons photographs show Bali's Mount Agung visible across the water.

The beach is open and sandy, with hotels and restaurants behind it and local vendors on the sand. A gado-gado seller walks the beach, according to Wikivoyage, and restaurants range from simple warungs to hotel dining rooms. Indonesian, Western and some Indian dishes are served, but strict vegetarian and Jain meals need advance notice.

Use Senggigi as a base for Pura Batu Bolong, Narmada and the north-coast ferries, and for the Rinjani area. Taxis are metered in the Mataram and Senggigi area, and a driver for the day is easy to arrange through your hotel.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Book a hotel with lifts and ground-floor rooms
  • Agree taxi or driver prices first
  • Check beach vendors' prices
  • Plan vegetarian meals in advance
