The short answer
Taman Mayura: what visitors should know first
Yes, as a quick 30 to 45 minute stop in Mataram. It is small, flat and easy, and good for understanding Lombok's Balinese-era history. Pair it with Narmada or Lingsar; do not expect large crowds or extensive facilities.
History and context
The story behind Taman Mayura
Taman Mayura was built in 1866 by Anak Agung Gde Ngurah Karangasem as a garden to complement the royal palace, according to Wikipedia. The garden was first called Taman Kelepug after the sound of the springs in the pond, and later Mayura after the peacocks kept there. After the Dutch defeated the kingdom, the palace was destroyed, leaving the park and the royal treasure. The Bale Kambang pavilion stored weapons and gunpowder during the war and later served as a courtroom under Dutch rule.

Why it matters
Why Taman Mayura is worth your time
Mayura is a compact record of how power changed in Lombok. The Balinese rulers built it in 1866 as a garden to complement their palace, and within decades the Dutch had defeated the kingdom and destroyed the palace itself, leaving only the garden and the royal treasure. What you see is what survived.
It matters because most visitors to Lombok see only beaches. A short stop here gives the island a human history, linking Balinese settlement, Sasak communities and Dutch rule. The garden is also a calm spot in a busy city, which makes it easy to fit in between meals or before a trip to Narmada. It is a place to read, not to rush.

How to experience it
Walk around the pond first; it is the centre of the garden, and the Bale Kambang pavilion sits on an island in the middle. Four open buildings of different sizes surround the pond, and a former office building stands to the north. Look for the cannons, one near the pavilion entrance and one near the park entrance, which recall the garden's use as a store for weapons during the war.
Take your time at the pavilion and read any signage on site; the building has been a royal pavilion, a gunpowder store and a Dutch-era courtroom. The grounds are about 245 by 139 metres, so a full loop is an easy walk.
The Padmasana shrine in the park is where the king once rested, and it is now a place of worship. Keep to the visitor areas, speak quietly and cover shoulders and knees.
