Why it matters
Why Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary is worth your time
Nal Sarovar is a large wetland that Gujarat has protected as a bird sanctuary since 1969. Wikipedia gives its area as about 120 sq km and notes its designation as a Ramsar site on 24 September 2012. In winter it hosts large flocks of migratory birds, including flamingos, pelicans, white storks and ducks.
For travellers based in Ahmedabad it is the most accessible big wetland, giving a very different day from the Lothal ruins.

How to experience it
Reach the lake as the light comes up. Boats leave around sunrise, and country boats carry small groups through the shallows to see flamingos, pelicans, storks and ducks. Rates are posted at the gate, though bargaining is common, so confirm the price before boarding.
Bring binoculars and a hat. The lake is open and the sun is strong by mid-morning. Vehicles run from the parking area to the lake, roughly 1 km away. Public transport and accommodation are limited, so most visitors come by car from Ahmedabad and return the same day.
Plan this as its own outing. Lothal lies in a different direction from Ahmedabad, so combining the two on one day is tiring and not worth the rush.
