The short answer
National Maritime Heritage Complex: what visitors should know first
Do not plan your day around it yet. Reports in May 2026 targeted completion of Phase 1A by July 2026, but I could not confirm it has opened. Check the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways or Gujarat Tourism before you go.
History and context
The story behind National Maritime Heritage Complex
Reports in May 2026 said the minister had directed officials to finish Phase 1A by July 2026. Phase 1B adds eight galleries, a lighthouse museum and a 50-dome theatre, and the project is estimated at about 4,500 crore rupees under the Sagarmala Programme. Earlier targets slipped, so treat dates cautiously.

Why it matters
Why National Maritime Heritage Complex is worth your time
The project is intended to place Lothal within the story of India's long maritime history. Reports describe a large project with six galleries in Phase 1A, a later phase of eight more galleries, a lighthouse museum and a 50-dome theatre, with a total estimated cost of about 4,500 crore rupees.
If it opens as planned, it could make the area a more complete day out. For now, its value to a traveller is mainly as a future possibility and as context for why Lothal is on the national map.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Treat this as a possible add-on, not the reason for your trip. The complex is a Sagarmala project of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, on about 400 acres near Lothal. Phase 1A was reported to include six museum galleries, a recreation of the ancient Lothal township, a jetty walkway and Indian Navy artefacts.
Before you go, confirm that any part is open to the public, what the ticketing is and how it connects to the ASI site. If it has opened, plan separate time for it, since the scale is much larger than the ASI ruins. Visit the real ruins first so the recreated town makes sense.
If it has not opened, you will simply see construction around the area, and that should not affect your visit to the ASI site and museum.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
- Check opening status with official sources
- Do not rely on it for planning
- Visit the ASI site first
- Ask Gujarat Tourism about tickets
