Guides for the stops on these routes
Pacing
Pacing a Luang Prabang trip for parents and children
- Do temples and the Royal Palace Museum between about 7 and 11 am, then rest. Heat peaks in March to May and humidity is high in the wet season.
- Temple visits mean removing shoes and walking on stone floors, so wear slip-on shoes and carry socks if the surface is hot or you prefer it.
- Mount Phou Si has roughly 320 steps according to a travel guide, with few places to sit, so older travellers may prefer to skip the summit and enjoy the temples at the foot.
- Choose a hotel inside the old town so you can walk back for a midday break, and ask for a ground-floor room if stairs are an issue.
- Kuang Si Falls has uneven wet steps and a long walk to the upper pools; take a driver, wear shoes with grip, and use the golf-cart shuttle if it is running.
- Medical help is limited. Luang Prabang Provincial Hospital is open round the clock, but a guide advises flying to Bangkok for serious illness, so buy travel insurance with evacuation cover.
