Why it matters

Why Luang Prabang Night Market is worth your time

The night market is a main evening activity in Luang Prabang, and it is where many local artisans and hill-tribe communities sell their work directly. It also shows another side of the town beyond the temples, and it takes place close to the Royal Palace Museum.

Buying hand-woven goods supports local craft traditions, but be selective: if something is very cheap, it may be imported. Ask where an item was made and by whom.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Arrive around 5 or 6 pm, when stalls are still opening and the air is cooler. Walk the length once before buying anything, then go back to the stalls you liked. Prices are negotiable, and a calm, smiling approach works best.

Stalls sell Hmong embroidery, cushion covers, scarves, silver and brass items, bags, paper lanterns and paintings, with vendors from Hmong, Khmu and Lao communities. Look closely at textiles to tell hand-woven work from machine-made imitations.

Behind the main row is a food alley. According to a travel guide, one stall is labelled vegetarian and another vegan, and plates are cheap, but hygiene varies, so look for busy stalls with fresh cooking. Ask about fish sauce and egg. Leave by about 9 pm if you are tired, since the crowd gets denser later.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Carry small notes in kip or baht
  • Walk the whole row before buying
  • Check food stalls for fish sauce and egg
  • Keep valuables zipped
