   Day 1: Imambaras and the Residency

   Start early at Bara Imambara to see the vast courtyard and the main hall before crowds arrive; allow 1.5–2 hours and explore the underground chamber if interested. Walk across to Chhota Imambara, a much smaller and more intricately decorated hall, and browse the adjacent museum. Have lunch at a local restaurant near Aminabad. In the afternoon, visit the Residency with its colonial gardens, ruined buildings and small museum. End the day with a walk around the Gomti River promenade or a visit to Rumi Darwaza at dusk.

2 days in Lucknow

1. 01

   Day 1: Imambaras, bazaars and the old city

   Begin at Bara Imambara early, then move to Chhota Imambara and its museum. Spend the late morning exploring Aminabad bazaar on foot; the narrow lanes are quieter at this hour. Have a late breakfast or early lunch of biryani or kebabs at a local favourite. In the afternoon, rest at your hotel or visit the air-conditioned City Museum. In the evening, walk through Hazratganj for shopping and end with dinner at a traditional Lucknow restaurant.

   Day 2: The Residency, gardens and culture

   Spend the morning at the Residency, exploring the grounds, the ruined buildings and the museum. Walk the adjoining gardens. Have lunch near the Residency area. In the afternoon, visit the State Museum or the Charbagh Museum if the heat permits, or rest. In the late afternoon, visit Rumi Darwaza, the grand gateway. If time allows, drive past La Martinière or Kaisarbagh for an exterior view. End with dinner at Oudh Restaurant or a traditional dum pukht spot.

3 days in Lucknow

1. 01

   Day 1: Grand Imambaras and bazaars

   Visit Bara Imambara and Chhota Imambara, allowing several hours to explore both in detail. Stop at the Imambara museum. Have lunch in the old city. Spend the late afternoon exploring Aminabad and Chowk bazaars, where jewellery, textiles and traditional items are sold. End with an evening walk and light dinner.

   Day 2: The Residency and colonial Lucknow

   Dedicate a full morning to the Residency, its buildings, gardens and museum. It is one of India's most poignant colonial sites. Have lunch nearby. In the afternoon, visit the City Museum or the nearby Charbagh Museum, then take a drive to see La Martinière college from outside (a striking Gothic Revival building). In the evening, visit Rumi Darwaza and the surrounding area, or walk along the Gomti River.

   Day 3: Culture, gardens and food

   Visit the State Museum or a smaller heritage site like Dilkusha Kothi if it is open. Spend the midday hours indoors. In the late afternoon, visit Ambedkar Park for its monuments and gardens, a quieter spot. If energy allows, see Taj-ul-Masajid (one of Asia's largest mosques) from outside. Spend the evening at Hazratganj for last-minute shopping, or visit a local market for Lucknow's famous sweets and meat products to take home. End with a leisurely dinner, perhaps a dum pukht biryani or kebabs at a heritage restaurant.

Make the plan work for everyone

• Visit the Imambaras early in the day, before the afternoon heat and larger tour groups arrive.
• The Residency is one of India's most manageable heritage sites: shaded, mostly level, with benches and water available. Spend a full morning there.
• Hire a car and driver for the whole day; Lucknow is sprawling, and walking between sights in the heat is tiring.
• Choose a hotel with a lift and ask for a ground-floor or mid-level room. Hazratganj and Charbagh areas have modern hotels; the old city has many steep stairs.
• Lunch is the heaviest meal for Lucknow's Nawabi cuisine; have a lighter early breakfast and afternoon snacks to conserve energy.
• Keep afternoons free from 1–4 p.m., when the heat peaks. Rest at your hotel, visit an air-conditioned museum or sit in a café.
