The short answer

Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary: what visitors should know first

Go between November and February if you like birds or a quiet lakeside walk, and treat it as a half-day outing from Lucknow. Outside winter the lake holds far fewer birds. Bring binoculars and water, and confirm gate hours and boating before you set off.

History and context

The story behind Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary

The sanctuary was declared by a state notification dated 7 August 1984 and covers about 224.6 hectares around a lake in Nawabganj tehsil, Unnao district. It was renamed in 2015 as the Shahid Chandra Shekhar Azad Bird Sanctuary, though most signs and travel listings still use the older name.

In September 2019 it was designated a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance. Local listings describe it as a breeding and wintering ground for resident and migratory waterbirds.

Why it matters

Why Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary is worth your time

Nawabganj is one of the easiest wetlands to reach from a large Indian city, so it gives Lucknow visitors a chance to see migratory waterfowl without a long journey or a safari booking. The lake was declared a sanctuary by notification in August 1984 and was added to the Ramsar list of wetlands of international importance in September 2019.

Its value is seasonal and honest rather than spectacular: bird numbers are reported to have fallen since the 1990s, and the site can feel under-maintained. It rewards patient, quiet visitors in winter, and it is a pleasant change of pace after several days among the Imambaras and bazaars of the old city.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    The lake at first light

Calm water and low light bring waterfowl into view; scan the shallows with binoculars before the day warms up.

  2. 02

    Watchtower and viewing points

Climb the tower for a wider view across the lake and its reedy edges, steps permitting.

  3. 03

    Lakeside cycle trail

A trail of about 2.6 km follows the water and is an easy, flat way to cover the shoreline.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Leave Lucknow early and take the Kanpur road; the sanctuary lies beside the highway about 43 km out, so a taxi or your own car is the practical choice. Aim to be at the lake in the first hours after opening, when the water is calm and the light is soft. Waterbirds are usually some distance from the shore, which makes binoculars far more useful than a phone camera.

Walk the lakeside paths slowly and stop at the watchtower and viewing points. In winter the lake can hold garganey, mallard, wigeon, purple moorhen, little grebe and red-wattled lapwing, and the open-billed stork is the sanctuary's emblem bird. A cycle trail of roughly 2.6 km runs along the lake if you have the energy. A deer park and a children's park make it easy for a family group with mixed interests.

Expect a modest, lightly developed site rather than a polished reserve. Facilities such as the cafeteria, boating and interpretation centre may vary by season, so carry water and snacks. Plan to be back on the road before late afternoon traffic builds on the highway.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Go between November and February for the best birdlife
  • Confirm gate hours, fees and boating with the forest office before travelling
  • Carry binoculars, water, snacks and a hat
  • Arrange a car for the day; public transport is slow from Lucknow
  • Leave in good time to avoid highway traffic on the return
