Area by area

Maafushi neighbourhoods compared

  1. 01

Near the tourist beach (north end)

Best for: Travellers who want to walk to the swimming beach

Good to know: Wikivoyage places the bikini beach at the north end of the island. Guesthouses nearby suit families who want short walks. Ask about noise, shade and how far you are from the harbour.

  2. 02

Around the harbour and main lanes

Best for: Easy arrival and departure, shops and cafés

Good to know: Staying near the harbour shortens luggage drags and puts shops and cafés on your doorstep, at the price of boat noise and foot traffic.

  3. 03

A quieter neighbouring island (Guraidhoo or Gulhi)

Best for: Visitors who find Maafushi busy

Good to know: Smaller local islands in the same atoll have fewer guesthouses and a calmer pace, but fewer restaurants and services. Check the current options yourself.

  4. 04

    A resort island instead

Best for: Travellers who want swimwear everywhere or alcohol

Good to know: Resorts handle special diets and private beaches more easily, but cost far more. The same airport and speedboat or seaplane transfers apply.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
