Plan 01

1 day in Machilipatnam

  1. 01

Day 1: Craft, port and coast

Start at Pedana in the morning to see Kalamkari block carving, printing and washing in a family workshop. Return to town for the Dutch cemetery, then walk or drive through the old Bandar port quarter to see the fort wall fragment and cyclone shelter. Buy Bandar laddu for lunch snacks and a gift box. In the late afternoon drive to Manginapudi for the beach and lighthouse, and finish at the Pandurangaswamy temple in Chilakalapudi if time allows.

    Day 2: Coast and delta

Krishna Wildlife SanctuaryHalf a day to a full day including travelModerateNovember to February, when the air is cooler and winter migrant birds are in the delta; avoid the October to November cyclone season

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Krishna Wildlife Sanctuary: Roads in the delta are flat but can be rough, and facilities such as seating, shade and toilets cannot be assumed. Boat boarding on muddy banks can be difficult for anyone with knee or balance problems. Carry water, a hat and a basic first-aid kit.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Machilipatnam trip for parents and children

  • Do one outing in the morning and rest in the afternoon; March to June afternoons are hot and humid.
  • Keep the Dutch cemetery, Bandar ruins and Manginapudi short; paths are uneven and there is little shade.
  • Hire a car with a driver you trust for Pedana and the delta; public transport to rural sights is limited.
  • Carry water, snacks, a hat and basic medicines; facilities on the delta roads are sparse.
  • Avoid October and November when heavy rain and cyclones can disrupt travel.
  • Pace sweets: Bandar laddu is rich, so share one if you are managing blood sugar.
