Plan 01
1 day in Mahabalipuram
- 01
Day 1: Monuments and the shore
Arrive early and go straight to the Shore Temple to catch sunrise light on the stone. Spend an hour here, then walk inland to see the Pancha Rathas and the carved boulder sites. By mid-morning, visit the rock-cut caves and the Descent of the Ganges relief, which is best seen before the sun climbs too high. Have lunch at a beachfront shack or inland restaurant, then rest during the hottest hours. In the late afternoon, return to the shore for a walk along the rocks, visit any smaller cave temples or sculpture sites you missed, and watch the sunset from the beach. End with a simple dinner of local fish curry or vegetarian South Indian food.

Plan 02
2 days in Mahabalipuram
- 01
Day 1: UNESCO monuments and cave temples
Start before dawn to see the Shore Temple at sunrise, when the light is low and the tourist buses have not yet arrived. Spend an unhurried morning exploring the temple, then walk to the Pancha Rathas and spend time studying the carvings. Visit the Descent of the Ganges relief with a guide to understand the narrative of the carving. After lunch and a rest, visit Krishna Mandapa, a rock-cut cave where a large bas-relief shows Krishna lifting the Govardhan mountain. End the day with a walk to the Arjuna's Penance or Mahabalipuram Lighthouse viewpoint if energy allows, or simply walk the beach at dusk.
- 02
Day 2: Tiger Cave and a day trip option
Visit Tiger Cave, about 3 km north, where a stone lion's head marks a small rock shrine. The site is quieter and offers views over coconut groves and paddy fields. Return to town for a leisurely lunch and explore local craft shops and the fishing harbour. If time allows, visit a village temple or the small Mahabalipuram Museum to learn more about the Pallava period. Alternatively, take a half-day trip to Tirupati temple or the temple town of Kanchipuram, both about 30–45 minutes by road, then return to Mahabalipuram for the evening.

Plan 03
3 days in Mahabalipuram
- 01
Day 1: Shore Temple and the Pancha Rathas
Begin before dawn at the Shore Temple and spend two hours exploring the structure and its surroundings without rush. Walk to the Pancha Rathas and understand why each of the five monolithic temples is distinct in style—Dharmaraja, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula Sahadeva and Draupadi. Visit nearby carved boulders and the Krishna Mandapa cave. Have lunch inland, rest, and in the late afternoon visit the Descent of the Ganges relief, one of the finest rock carvings in India. End with a beach sunset walk.
- 02
Day 2: Cave temples and inland sites
Visit Mahishasuramardini Cave, where a carving shows the goddess Durga slaying the buffalo demon. Explore Varaha Cave, where Varaha the boar avatar is carved in magnificent detail. Walk to Tiger Cave, a quieter site north of town with a stone tiger head carved over a small shrine. Return to town, visit the small museum, and spend the late afternoon browsing local craft shops or watching fishermen at the harbour. Dine at a beachfront restaurant.
- 03
Day 3: Temples and a day trip
Visit any smaller cave sites or sculpture clusters you have not yet seen, such as Olakkanatha temple or the Ganesha Ratha. Take a half-day trip to Kanchipuram, about 45 minutes by road, to see the Kailasanatha and Vaikuntha Perumal temples, which are older or contemporary with Mahabalipuram's monuments. Return to Mahabalipuram in the late afternoon, rest, and enjoy a sunset walk or a final visit to your favourite site.

Pacing
Make the plan work for everyone
- Visit the Shore Temple and Pancha Rathas at or just after sunrise, before the midday heat and day-tripper crowds. The light is also best in early morning.
- Plan two major activities in the morning and keep afternoons free for rest at your hotel. Even at 25–28 degrees Celsius in winter, the sun and stone are tiring.
- Wear a hat, sunscreen and comfortable walking shoes; bring a refillable water bottle and sip regularly. Dehydration in coastal heat is a real concern.
- Hire a local guide for half a day to understand the carvings and history; it enriches the visit and means you do not have to read plaques while standing in the sun.
- Most of the main monuments are outdoors but level. Rock-cut caves have steep steps down to enter; if mobility is a concern, your guide can advise which caves to skip and which are easiest to manage.
- The nearest hospital and pharmacy are in Chengalpattu, about 30 km away; note your hotel's location and nearest doctor. Malaria is not endemic, but mosquito repellent in the evening is sensible.
