Plan 01

1 day in Mahe

  1. 01

Day 1: Shrine, river and sunset

Start at St. Teresa's Shrine in the morning, dressed modestly, and spend half an hour inside. Walk or drive to Azhimukham and Tagore Park to see the Marianne statue and the river mouth, then follow the riverside walkway towards Government House and look for the museum if it is open. Break for lunch and rest in the hottest hours. In the late afternoon, go up the Mooppenkunnu hillock to see the lighthouse and wait for sunset over the Arabian Sea.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time

Azhimukham and Tagore Park45 to 75 minutesEasyLate afternoon for softer light and sea breeze; November to February for comfort

Pace: All the stops today are easy on the legs.

Spend the morning at Puthalam Bhagavathy Temple if you are interested in ritual art or have timed a March visit, or try boating at Manjakkal in the dry season. Drive to Thalassery Fort in the afternoon and, if energy allows, add the Muzhappilangad drive-in beach on the way towards Kannur.

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Thalassery Fort: Level in parts but with steps, uneven laterite and little shade. Older visitors can see the entrance and the outer walls without climbing the ramparts.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Mahe trip for parents and children

  • Visit in the dry season, November to February, and avoid the heavy monsoon months.
  • Plan one outing in the morning and one at sunset, with a rest in between.
  • The river walkway and shrine are level; the hillock has slopes, so stop at the lower benches if needed.
  • Avoid the main days of the October feast unless you are comfortable with large crowds.
  • Wear modest clothing for the shrine and temple, and carry water, a hat and sun protection.
  • Use a taxi or auto for town transfers rather than long walks in humid heat.
