The short answer

Fish Point (Machali Point): what visitors should know first

Worth it if you have a half day and a car. It is the further of the two famous waterfall points, reported at around 17 km from the village, and the view is best after rain. Skip it in the dry months, or when you are short on time.

Why it matters

Why Fish Point (Machali Point) is worth your time

Fish Point is one of the two waterfall points the Surguja district page names, alongside Tiger Point, as the main draws of Mainpat. It is the more remote of the pair, which is part of its appeal: fewer people, longer views, and a clearer sense of how far the plateau runs.

It also gives a sense of Mainpat's scale. The village is small, but the tableland around it is large, and the edge viewpoints are where it shows. Visiting in the right season changes everything, so check recent rain before you commit a half day to it.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    The Machali drop

The river goes over the plateau edge in a fall reported at about 80 metres; it is at its best after the rains.

  2. 02

    The long view

Forest stretches below the edge, with cloud lying in the valley on some mornings.

  3. 03

    The drive itself

The route crosses the plateau and gives a better idea of Mainpat than the village does.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Fish Point sits well beyond the village, about 17 km on the figures given by travel guides, so treat it as a half-day excursion and set off in the morning. Leave time for the drive back; the plateau roads are poorly signed and mobile signal is patchy, so ask locally for directions instead of relying on a map app.

The point overlooks the Machali river as it drops over the plateau edge. Guides give the height as about 80 metres, and the view is wide: forest below, the river threading through it, and cloud sometimes lying in the valley. Keep behind any barrier, as the edge is steep.

The name comes from a fish species found in the river. You will see it called both Fish Point and Machali Point (machali means fish in Hindi). Combine it with a viewpoint or two on the way back, but do not try to fit it into the same morning as Tiger Point, Jaljali and Mehta Point if anyone in the group tires easily.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Ask locally for the current road and viewpoint conditions
  • Start in the morning and plan to be back before dusk
  • Carry water and snacks; shops may be few
  • Keep behind barriers; the drop is steep
  • Do not book adventure activities without checking operator safety
