The short answer

Mainpat Tibetan Settlement (the camps): what visitors should know first

Yes, if you want to understand the people of the plateau. Spend a morning walking or driving between camps, visiting monasteries and ask before photographing. Treat it as a living community, not an exhibit, and buy crafts only where they are on sale.

History and context

The story behind Mainpat Tibetan Settlement (the camps)

After the migration of Tibetans to India in 1962-63, land on the Mainpat hill was allotted for refugees; Wikipedia says 3,000 acres were given by the Home Ministry to about 1,400 immigrants. Wikivoyage describes about 2,000 people living in seven settlements, most with a Tibetan Buddhist monastery. Figures vary between sources, so treat them as approximate.

The settlement is also called Mainpat Phendeling in Central Tibetan Administration reporting, which recorded an official visit in August 2025.

Why it matters

Why Mainpat Tibetan Settlement (the camps) is worth your time

The settlement is the most human thing on the plateau. After 1962-63, when many Tibetans came to India, the Indian government allotted land at Mainpat; Wikipedia gives the figure as 3,000 acres for about 1,400 immigrants. Over the following decades the community built monasteries, a school and the institutions of a settlement, and they are still there.

A visit gives context to the whole region. The designer mats that Surguja district mentions, the monasteries, the nickname Mini Tibet: all come from this history. Respectful visitors support the community by buying crafts directly, by listening, and by not treating the camps as a photo opportunity.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Think of this as a half-day circuit rather than a single sight. The settlement has seven camps; the Central Tibetan Administration's August 2025 report, for example, mentions monasteries in Camps 1 and 2, a school, a co-operative society, a health centre and an old age home. Camp 3 is singled out for its monastery by Wikivoyage.

Start at the monasteries, then walk a lane or two to see the school, prayer flags and houses. Spend a few minutes in the co-operative if it is open; Surguja district names the Tibetan designer mats, or carpets, as a local product. Ask before taking pictures, particularly of people.

Go with a hired car and a driver who knows the camps. Distances between them are too long to walk comfortably, signage is limited and mobile signal is weak. Buy a snack or tea only from places that look to be trading, and be back on the main road before dusk.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Hire a driver who knows the camps
  • Ask before photographing people
  • Do not enter homes uninvited
  • Buy crafts only where they are offered
  • Be back on the main road before dusk
