The short answer
Dakhinpat Satra: what visitors should know first
Worth it if you are on the island in November or want a quieter, more remote satra. Allow it as a half-day add-on from the southern side, and check locally whether the manuscript collection can be seen.
History and context
The story behind Dakhinpat Satra
Wikipedia dates Dakhinpat Satra to 1654, founded by Banamali Dev Goswami with the support of Ahom king Jayadhwaj Singha, who gave land grants for its upkeep. It follows the Brahmasamhati sect founded by Damodardev and is one of the four Chari-Raj satras with Auniati, Garamur and Kuruabahi.
The satra holds hundreds of illustrated manuscripts and Ahom-period artefacts and hosts an annual Raas festival.

Why it matters
Why Dakhinpat Satra is worth your time
Dakhinpat is one of the four principal royal satras and its Raas festival is among the best-known on Majuli. The satra belongs to the Brahmasamhati tradition and its collection of illustrated manuscripts and Ahom-era artefacts makes it significant for historians as well as devotees.
Seeing it helps you understand that Majuli's satras are not interchangeable. Each has its lineage, patron and speciality, and each holds a piece of Assam's cultural memory. A quiet visit here, ideally with a local guide who can explain what you see, adds depth to a trip otherwise focused on the better-known satras.

How to experience it
Dakhinpat is quieter than Kamalabari or Auniati and best taken as part of a longer taxi day when you already have a southern route. Arrive in the morning, remove footwear at the gate area when asked, and ask a monk if you may look inside the namghar. Cattle roam freely and the compound has a rural calm.
The satra is known for its Raas festival in autumn, when devotees and visitors come for performances based on Krishna's life. Outside festival days you will mostly see daily routines, with monks cooking, tending cows and rehearsing. Ask about the manuscript collection, but do not insist; access depends on the monks.
Because it lies away from the central cluster, build in time for the road and for a stop for tea.
Plan with confidence
