The short answer

Samaguri Satra: what visitors should know first

Yes, if you want to see something made rather than only visited. Go in the morning when artists are working, buy only from makers and expect small masks to be easy to carry while large ones are not.

History and context

The story behind Samaguri Satra

The art of mask-making has been practised at Samaguri Satra for around three centuries according to local accounts. Hem Chandra Goswami established a mask-making training institute at the satra in 1980 and is credited with masks that let actors deliver dialogue. Mukha Xilpo and manuscript painting from Majuli received GI tags.

Why it matters

Why Samaguri Satra is worth your time

Mask-making is part of the island's theatre, not decoration. Bhaona actors wear masks to become gods and demons, and the craft keeps both the materials and the stories in local hands. The recognition of Majuli's Mukha Xilpo with a Geographical Indication tag marks that craft as a distinctive local product.

Visiting Samaguri turns an abstract idea of heritage into something you can watch being made. It also puts money directly in artists' hands, which matters on an island where erosion has damaged livelihoods. Buy from makers where you can, and avoid imitations at the ghat.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Samaguri is where Majuli's mask-making is most visible. Walk to the workshop area and watch artists shape frames in bamboo, then build up the form with cloth, clay and cow dung, smooth it with a bamboo file and paint it with natural dyes. Masks range from palm-size to huge figures that cover the actor's whole body.

The subjects are the characters of bhaona, the devotional theatre created by Sankardev: Ravana, Garuda, Narasimha, Hanuman and many demons. Ask what a mask is used for and how long it took; most artists are glad to explain. If you want to buy, small masks pack easily and large ones need careful wrapping.

Hem Chandra Goswami, from Samaguri, became known for making masks that let actors speak. Ask whether the training school he founded is open to visitors.
