Sri Poyatha Vinayagar Moorthi Temple: what visitors should know first

Yes, especially for Hindu visitors and anyone curious about the Chitty community. It is small, takes 15 to 20 minutes, and has a simple, local feel; dress modestly, remove shoes and check when the temple is open.

History and context

The story behind Sri Poyatha Vinayagar Moorthi Temple

The date of 1781 comes from the Dutch freehold title given to the Chitty community. The temple belongs to the Malacca Chitty community but has been managed by the Malacca Nagarathar Nattukkottai Chettiar since a 1962 agreement.

Why it matters

Why Sri Poyatha Vinayagar Moorthi Temple is worth your time

The temple is dated to 1781, from the Dutch land grant given to the Chitty community of Malacca. It is described as the oldest existing Hindu temple in Malaysia. It was built by Thaivanayagam Chitty, a Chitty community leader, in a simplified Dravidian style.

It matters to Indian visitors because it shows a centuries-old Tamil-Hindu presence in Malacca, and the Chitty community that grew from it. It also completes the picture of Harmony Street, where a Hindu temple, a Chinese temple and a mosque stand within a few hundred metres.

How to experience it

The temple is on Jalan Tukang Emas, a few doors from Kampung Kling Mosque and a short walk from Cheng Hoon Teng. It is the oldest of the three places of worship that earned the street its Harmony Street name. The main shrine is for Vinayagar (Ganesha), with a second altar for Murugan, and a sculpture of Ganesha with a human body and four hands in a back room.

The temple is built in a Chitty style, a simplified form of Dravidian architecture, with fewer rows of carved deities than South Indian temples. If you know temples in Tamil Nadu, you will notice the contrast. Remove shoes at the entrance, dress modestly and follow the lead of worshippers.

It is managed by the Malacca Nagarathar Nattukkottai Chettiar, under an arrangement dating from 1962. Visit it with the other two places of worship, but give yourself a few minutes to sit and watch.

Plan with confidence

Visit as a guest, not a spectator.

  • Remove shoes and dress modestly
  • Check opening times
  • Bring small change for donations
